• Vitamin D3 – The biological action of vitamin D3 produced by exposure to UVB rays is carried out by calcitriol which, as an active hormone, contributes to the proper functioning of the immune system. Good blood levels of vitamin D induce the synthesis of a specific receptor on the external part of the cell membrane of T lymphocytes, triggering an adequate immune response capable of counteracting viral and bacterial activity. Recent research for coronaviruses has demonstrated a possible second viral access key in addition to binding to the ACE2 receptor. This would involve the cell surface protein neuropilin 1 (NPR1), which would bind to a lateral tract of the viral Spike protein, explaining the viral diffusion in other organs in addition to the respiratory ones. This mechanism would be activated by the “cutting of furin”. Vitamin D3 as a hormone, during its “cutting” synthesis, could act at this level by inhibiting the viral attachment mechanism.
• Myrciaria Dubia – Myrciaria Dubia is a plant of the Myrtaceae family. The Indians already knew the fruit of the plant (Camu Camu) and used it as an energy food. The fruit has a high vitamin C content of 2.7 grams per 100 grams of pulp, associated with other substances such as flavonoid glycosides, hesperidin, rutin, phenolic precursors of tannin and catechins that optimize its absorption. Excellent support for the immune system, it promotes the body's natural defenses. It promotes the fluidity of bronchial secretions and protection against pathogens of the upper respiratory tract.
• Echinacea Purpurea – Contains alkylamides and isobutylamides, long-chain fatty acids, flavonoids, fructans, alkaloids, pollen, glycoproteins and essential oil. Its immunostimulant action consists in the increase of phagocytosis, i.e. the ability of macrophages, neutrophils and monocytes to incorporate bacteria, viruses and foreign particles into the cytoplasm. It induces the differentiation of immature white blood cells into mature white blood cells and the production of interferons and interleukins.
• Hesperidin – Hesperidin is a glycosylated bioflavonoid found in citrus fruits. Its aglycone, hesperetin, is the one that has the biological effect. It has a significant antiviral action. Studies have shown that hesperidin, having a low binding energy both with the “spike” protein of coronaviruses and with the main proteases that transform viral proteins (pp1a and ppa1b), can interfere with the internalization of the ACE2 receptor and with the viral proteolysis that allows its replication. Hesperidin also interacts with the blocking mechanism on hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) for influenza viruses. Furthermore, the hesperidin-ascorbic acid association counteracts the effects of oxygen free radicals.
• Quercetin – Has a high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory power. Inhibits the excessive production of ROS, inhibits the mechanisms that lead to the production of histamine, prostaglandins and leukotrienes. The interference that quercetin exerts on the attachment of influenza viruses is known. Recently, its ability to block the enzymatic activity of 3CLpro, a key element for the replication of coronaviruses, has been demonstrated in the laboratory.
